So my Lexus LS400 is in need of new shoes and I've been looking at these Sumitomo HTR ZII's on tirerack. They're extremely cheap ($68 per tire) and seem to have some decent reviews.
I was wondering why anyone would buy $150 tires when there are tires like these for half the price. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences with cheaper tires? Any recommendations for tires? I'm mainly looking for the best performance summer tires since I live in California and All-Seasons are absolutely pointless.

Its because that is a shitty brand and a shitty tire. I run nitto NT555's on my marauder, and pirelli P zero's on my bmw. Both are great tires.

I have heard people talk on about how good Michelin Pilot Super Sports are for a summer tire. 30k mile warranty, comfortable, great dry grip, great wet grip, and it works in temps below 50 degrees as well. Honestly, if you aren't going to be tracking the car every 5 minutes, these should be the tire you go with.

Tires: what you pay is what you get.

Look good, work well and as an added bonus the side walls keep the rims from touching the curb. All in all it was a good choice!
Well they sound like all you can ask for from a tire.

Hah! You read one of the good reviews. The last little perk from the sidewalls really gets what I'm looking for.

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it is automatically shitty. Sumitomo is a large company and maybe they can cut costs by keeping the manufacturing processes in-house.

do some research, any time a sumitomo tire has come across for discussion on the SVT forum I'm on the instant reply is "junk" because they are.
You ever hear the term "You get what you pay for?" Tires are no exception. My Merc is making a damn good bit more power than your lexus and my nittos will dead hook from 20mph and above. I've read about cobra owners running wider sumi's with similar power to me and having massive traction issues.

I had a set a couple of years ago on my MR2 (225/45R17), they were noisy until they broke in, then they had average water displacement, soft tyre walls. I could feel the tyre walls moving about under heavy cornering.
They'd be fine for a DD, so long as you didn't live somewhere that rained a lot.

Thanks for the feedback. Were the tires worth the price in the long run? Did you replace them with some more expensive brand?

That was actually the only review I read. I mean, if it keeps da rimz off the curb they have to be good tires.
But seriously, they probably aren't great.

Yeah I know I'm probably getting what I pay for. But maybe they're just 75% of what a good tire is at 50% of the price. That's still good value considering the tires I have on right now are chinese...(It came with it when I bought it).

My friend bought a tuned 95 gti in 98 with these tires. 20 year old tire tech. They aren't worth the savings.

I think Sumitomo is very similar to Falken, the two brands are tyres made by the same company for different markets.
(A bit of trivia: did you know propellers for the Mitsubishi A6M Zero were made by the Sumitomo company?)

the old Sumitomo HTR 100 was a bargain tire legend, and the main reason they became known in the us market. Sadly the HTRzII is just an OK tire. I wouldn't call it junk, but it ranks on the get what you pay for scale..it would probably be a fine daily tire as long as its not too wet. Its a well made product, but the tread chemistry and carcass design are not up to par with tires from others

current sumitomo are products are well made, have very good consistency, are durable, and provide solidly middling performance. They are good value, but not high performance.

The MPSS is a great tire, but I would never trow them on a Lexus luxo-barge

They are more for sports cars, didn't know he had a Lexus I think he should do fine with any summer tire in the "gran touring" category on tire rack. Except Michelin Primacy t hose are horrid.

they were ok by 1995 standards but they were loud and scary in the rain despite their look. The compound sucks. But I like high perf tires so driving these regularly I'm sure they're fine. Just old.

On Mustang and F-body forums the HTR and it's variants are usually discussed and yes, they don't have a great rep. It's basically the "I blew basically my entire budget on larger wheels and I have to have SOMETHING on there".
Doesn't mean everything the company makes is poor, but their high performance tires sure seem that way.
To the OP: $150 for tires is not expensive. For $68 these are probably passable for basic street use. I'd put them up there with Riken Raptors.

i replaced them with Bridgestone potenza re001's, they were better in all areas except they took longer to get up to temp. I got nearly twice the longevity out of them too. I'm not sure if you can even get re001's anymore, I now use the re002's that have better wet weather performance. I think it worked out to be twice the price, but I personally thought it was worth it.

I have those on my Mustang and they are worlds better than the Pirelli tires that shipped OEM. Better grip, quiter and more comfortable. NP.

Buy the Continentals or the Michelins... You won't regret. They're going to be on your car for a long time, make sure you don't regret your choice.

Well they are still a relatively high mileage street tire. Most mustang people are getting close to 30k miles on them DD. And they do get good grip if you get them warmed up. They don't get any grip below 60 degrees... Autocross usually took the first couple of runs to get them up to ideal temperature. However for super grip I bought these:

My Pirellis lasted about 25K and I DDed on them. No track time or autocross. Heat was never an issue as I live in AZ. Those tires look awesome that you posted.

Mine required cooling with water between runs when it was over 90. They would get a bit slimy.
